Hey Oppo. I have a buddy of mine who is looking for a 2+2 (prefers the looks) or 4-door that is sporty but understated. Basically, he wants to have the most fun he can have in a car without any of the sports-car drawbacks like badge smugness or flashy looks. But he also wants something that can fit a baby on the way. I suggested the Golf R 2-dr, since he uses his car to pick up clients and take co-workers/bosses to lunch. That way they are in a pretty mature looking interior (not knowing that car can whip with some bolt-ons and engine tuning). He and his wife drove it and like the idea. (Especially since they thought the Fords were a bit juvenile.) But he nor I have ever owned German, and are leery concerning maintenance and wonky electronics. What is the ideal car for him in the $23-$28k range (new or used, before taxes). We live in Texas, and his wife doesn't like the Mustang or Genesis Coupe. Thanks for the input, Oppo

Edit** I should mention. His wife is super picky about it not being over 4-5 years old.

Because you don't get the Fiat Panda, the Fiat 500 will have to do.

+1 on the 500. But get the Abarth. That thing is seriously badass. I'm also partial to Volvos so a C30 Polestar (if you can find one) would be nice. Possibly a nice Mini S? Mostly though, I'd suggest the GTI or one of the ST's. The ST's are you best bang for your buck.

This is a tough one. Every time I think sporty the CLA and A3 come to mind, but those aren't very understated (and can get pricey). The Maxima also comes to mind, but that is a bit larger and he probably wouldn't like the CVT (I hate those things, especially one a car Nissan calls a 4-door sports car). Would he consider a Mazda3 or 6? They aren't as fast or really sporty, but they drive nice and the 6 would be great for taking clients around in. I've seen Grand Tourings for sale for as low as 26k plus tax. He could also consider a couple year old TL, or maybe even a TSX. Since that's just a Euro Accord, it's certainly understated, but it's also an Acura so it's kind of sporty and reliable.

The Golf R is good, but good look finding one for 28 or less. There's also the Accord Sport which is basically a grown up Si or the GLI. Both are solid choices.

Subaru Legacy GT. Especially if you can find a Legacy 2.5 GT Spec B. Looks like a typical sedan on the outside, looks like a sports car on the inside, 5 or 6 speed manual, the suspension is soft enough to daily drive with passengers but will still keep you grounded. A few mods and you can get well over 300whp.

Similarly, you can shoot for the Saab 9-2X, which is another Subaru in sheep's clothing.

I love both of those options! I think his wife is fixated on newer cars though. She comes from a family of leasers and doesn't really understanding acquiring a car more than 4-5 years old. Go figure...

Yeah, he only likes stick. And thought the Acura's were kind of boring looking. Didn't like the beak styling. I thought about that... I'm usually pretty good at this, but it is a tough one. You're right. I can't think of much that's not a flat-billed-hat wearer's car which fits the bill.

His wife calls the Abarth a "toy car". I snuck off with him to test drive it and had a hoot. But it is a little too small for a growing family imo. That's what I said: GTI or R. I told him the problem was he can't wait until fall for the new GTI. That's the buy. But again, he is scared of German electronics and CEL's. I can't really tell him otherwise though.

Accord sport isn't bad. I'll have to see if he likes that. I always forget Honda has made anything since the S2000.

Yeah, I read this in line at a checkout and missed the part about the interior. Skip the WRX.

If you really want the appearance of a luxury sedan, you can take a look at a Buick Regal GS. It looks like all other Buicks do, so highway patrol won't give you a second look as you are cruising by, but the turbocharged I4 and the 6 speed manual lets this thing fly. The current MY is out of the price range, but if your friend's wife doesn't mind looking 1-2 year old "luxury" vehicles, it is certainly an option.

Yeah, if he was going to get a GTI or R he'd be doing himself a favor by waiting till fall. With that being said, if he's scared of German electrics, just make sure he buys it under warrantee. VW is offering some killer deals right now.

Focus ST? Fiesta ST? Chevy Sonic? WRX?

GTI seems like a good fit at the given price range.

I would HIGHLY recommend taking a look at the Volvo C30 T5 . It ticks every box your friend wants, the few new ones that are left can be had for $27k and change, and used/offlease ones go down from there.

If he likes 6, a Mazda6 i Touring with the manual would be a good, sensible, but still pretty fun choice. I saw one earlier today for 23k! For a pretty well equipped midsize sedan that gets 38mpg on the highway (probably closer to 28 in reality, but still very good). Also well under his budget and big back seat for baby seat.

I guess it might be upmarket enough. The interior is just on the lower end of comparable cars in its class. But the new one falls squarely in your friend's price range. ~$26k base. Maintenance costs will be low, esp with the warranty, but AWD means poor MPG. He also might be able to go pick up a '13 for cheap as dealers try to get them off the lots.

I'm not a tuning expert, but it would seem so. You can have the dealer install a "polestar" engine tuning kit for some extra hp, or you can send it to other companies, or tune it yourself. Read all about it here.
